How To Design a Room For an Autistic Child?

It is a common belief that managing and keeping an autistic child is one of the most tiresome tasks. To make your task easier, this blog has rounded up a few helpful tips that help you create an interesting environment for the kids with autistic needs.

Autistic children have different needs from other risks, and since a bedroom is their own space, it is important to take into consideration their needs to personalize it. With the help of these useful tips and suggestions, you can easily turn the autistic kid's room into relaxing, calming and comfy spaces.

Here are the few room decoration suggestions:

Choose Wall Colors Carefully

Opt for lighter shades of your child's favorite colors. String and bolder colors may overstimulate your child, unsettling them even in their own personal space. You can even take into consideration his/her favorite activities and use colors that remind him/her of it.

Enhance the Environment

Create a calming environment that your child love to be in. Simple decor. nature sounds, nature pictures, all can really calm down your autistic child's sensory. The calm environment of the room will also help when doubling your child's room up as their safe room, somewhere that can escape to.

Safe Furniture

Avoid hard and sharp furniture, cover electrical outlets, window guards, remove curtain rods and blinds and invest in safe place beds that have been specially designed for the kids with special needs.

On Storage

Toy bins and drawers or cupboards to keep away toys and games. Keep the room clutter to prevent sensory overload. Picture labels to let your child know where his/her toys are may also help as autistic children are usually visual learners and like orderliness. Also, keep in mind to leave an empty space in your room.

On textures

If your child is sensory defensive/craving, identify the textures he/she prefers and use that in the room. For eg. bed sheets, pillows, bean bags, textured wallpapers on the wall, rug. Avoid metallic furniture as they can be cold to touch and have no texture.
